Preliminary Notes:
- This study was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology
- I don’t believe that it’s necessary to take drugs to reach a beautifully altered state of consciousness. However, I also feel there is a lot to be learned from listening to the anecdotes of those who have experimented with certain substances, such as DMT.
Key Points of the Study:
- The above study discusses subjective reports of DMT journeys, and their potential implications. 2,561 reports were used.
- Many people report encountering seemingly autonomous entities after inhaling the substance DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine).
- DMT is produced endogenously, and occurs in many animal and plant species.
- More than half of the study participants who self identified as atheists prior to their inhalation of DMT no longer identified as atheist after their experiences on the substance.
Excerpts:
- “Although 41% of respondents reported fear during the encounter, the most prominent emotions both in the respondent and attributed to the entity were love, kindness, and joy.”
- “Most respondents endorsed that the entity had the attributes of being conscious, intelligent, and benevolent, existed in some real but different dimension of reality, and continued to exist after the encounter.”
